Quick Reference Guide

The Art and Science of Search

A Search Operator (also known as a Boolean Operator) can be defined as a mathematical set or instruction that joins or eliminates keywords to produce more complex or accurate search results. TutorBuddies is designed for how you think (we're assuming you think fast) and although there are some advantages to using Basic Search methodology (speed, intuitiveness, simplicity) your results may not appear as accurately when operators or phrases are not defined.

Search Operators offer you a simple way to perform complex searches. This Quick Reference Guide will teach you how to ask for and explore the search results that are most relevant to your requirements. This Quick Reference Guide will also show you how to link between more relevant tutors by using Discovery Features to explore the common traits or connections between tutors with specific or complementary knowledge in related or unrelated subjects.

Search Tips 101
  • Search Operator and Discovery Feature data functions allow you to combine multiple variables or tags into a search
  • Search by Institution Name, Department Name, Course Name, Course Code, Subject, Skill, or Interest
  • Combine phrases and words to change the relationship between search variables
  • All tutor names are indexed and searchable
  • To search for an exact name, enclose the name in quotation marks
  • To search for an exact tag or term, enclose the word(s) in quotation marks
  • Use NOT (or the “-“ symbol) to exclude results containing certain terms or words from your search
  • Use Discovery Features to jump between the most relevant results and explore course or subject connections between tutors
  • Discover all tutors at a specific school with specific or complementary knowledge in related or unrelated subjects
  • Search results are ranked by tutor activity (currently online or most recent log in)
  • Searches are NOT case sensitive (searching with all upper-case or lower-case will show you the same results)
  • Longer searches will produce results but a variance in the accuracy may exist
  • Look for variants or try removing quotations to reflect different results
